Paul Butterworth

I was brought up in Yorkshire, UK, where my dad was a vicar and lived for many years in the Yorkshire Dales. After playing Barry in the Full Monty my acting agent suggested I move nearer to London, so I now work from my studio in Cambridge.

When my son went to university in 2015, I enrolled on a BA (Hons) Painting degree with the University for the Creative Arts/Open College of the Arts campus. I have my degree show 11th to 13th August 2023 at the Artspace in Cambridge. In my graduation year I have specialised in abstraction making flat colour machines. My raw material is colour itself, in the form of saturated secondary colours. My medium is acrylic on canvas.

I'm also a professional actor and studied drama teaching at the Central School of Speech and Drama from 1974-1977, graduating with a Cert ED and Central School Diploma in Acting. My first job was in children's theatre and in the 1980s and 1990s I was earning a full time living from northern TV and film. In 1988 I graduated from Leeds Becket university in 1988 with a BA in English and History (core course of Hermeneutics). My next film is Allelujah starring Judi Dench and Jennifer Saunders where I play Richard.
